Broken Knight - LJ Shen

Ruminations of an Insomniac..

Knight and Luna. Where to even begin? This was a re-read for me, so I could refresh my memory. And I'm so glad I did. Throwing in everything, from quippy dialogue that made me laugh out loud to entire chapters that made me straight up ugly cry, LJ Shen drown me in their world.

Trauma does funny things to us, as people. I think it's because we're not actually designed to deal with it, so our minds construct alternative paths to help us cope. But having people in our corner, while we navigate through those backroads, is so critical. Tragedy knits us together in the most unexpected ways.

“I hate that word. Fine. It’s not good. It’s not bad. It’s nothing.” - Luna Rexroth

Their whole lives, Knight and Luna have been attached at the hip. Him, forever protecting his Moonshine from more hurt. A literal Knight in shining armour (if you substitute shining armour with football gear). And her, quietly observing and never forgetting a single moment, as the world unfolds around them. But somewhere along the line, their innocence became something more.

Among so many other things (I could talk or write for days about all the life things it touches on), this story beautifully illustrates the nuance of all the people that walk into (and potentially out of) our lives. Parents and siblings. Friends, new and old. The chance encounters. The relationships we construct out of convenience or necessity. And the most magical of them all (in my opinion), the rarely actually encountered, ride or die. The one that holds space in the fibre of who we are, the other end of our red string. The one we choose. “Always. Whenever. Forever.”

"Remember, my love. The sun will rise tomorrow. It always does. And don’t you dare live one day of your life without basking in its glory." - Rosie Leblanc-Cole

Rating:

Book Boyfriend: 9/10 (yeah, I know. he's one of my all time favorites. but he's also so extraordinarily flawed)
Flow: 10/10 (LJ Shen is almost always flawless in this category ❤️)
Plot: 9/10 (only because the path these characters take was super frustrating for me to follow along with. it all made sense at the end though)

Overall: 9/10

Synopsis:
Not all love stories are written the same way. Ours had torn chapters, missing paragraphs, and a bittersweet ending.

Luna Rexroth is everyone’s favorite wallflower.
Sweet.
Caring.
Charitable.
Quiet.
Fake.
Underneath the meek, tomboy exterior everyone loves (yet pities) is a girl who knows exactly what, and who, she wants—namely, the boy from the treehouse who taught her how to curse in sign language.
Who taught her how to laugh.
To live.
To love.

Knight Cole is everyone’s favorite football hero.
Gorgeous.
Athletic.
Rugged.
Popular.
Liar.
This daredevil hell-raiser could knock you up with his gaze alone, but he only has eyes for the girl across the street: Luna.
But Luna is not who she used to be. She doesn’t need his protection anymore.
When life throws a curveball at All Saints’ golden boy, he’s forced to realize not all knights are heroes.
Sometimes, the greatest love stories flourish in tragedy.
