A Summer of Chances - Roxanne Tully

Ruminations of an Insomniac..

Sticky sweet and rife with self discovery, Roxanne Tully paints a vibrant picture with her words. It's said that you will find what you're seeking, when you stop looking. Throwing caution to the wind, Amy followed a whim and then had to get creative. Unsure of her future and not positive what she is searching for, this is the story of a wayward path leading her to epiphany.

"Amy, whatever your reasons are for coming here, even if you don't know what they are, you're following your heart. Only brave people follow their hearts when they don't know where it's leading them." - Rick Foster

This book challenged me, but not in the way most would assume. Eyes wide open, I dove into pages saturated with summer nostalgia, just as the coldest weeks of our year (I'm talking minus 20-30°C here) decided to settle in. Alas, burying my head in the sand to stave off my reality, I adored the journey these words took me on.

Tully's words took me back to my youth. To a place where I would purposefully soak in every drop of my surroundings. A time that my fingers itched for pencils and brushes, at the most inopportune moments, because I so desperately wanted to capture the very essence of my surroundings on paper. But more than that, she threw in a subtly building (PG) romance. It's soft and enchanting. I didn't want to overuse "sweet" but it's honestly the most fitting word.

Rating:

Book Boyfriend: 8/10 (he is genuine and adorable, but I felt like we didn't quite get enough of him)
Flow: 9/10
Plot: 8/10 (while I enjoyed the story, it could have been longer. and the climax didn't quite hit the mark for me)

Overall: 8.5/10 (it's a wonderfully written story. i would recommend it to someone looking for a quick, soft read or to teen readers - it's actually a YA book, and it 100% fits there -)

Currently available on Kindle (and Kindle Unlimited).

Broken Elite - Waverly Alexander

Ramblings of a Bookworm...

Oh man, where do I even begin?  With her debut novel, Broken Elite, Waverly Alexander has perfectly encapsulated angst and pain in this beautifully tragic story.  Two broken souls trying to mend themselves, but haven't the slightest clue how.  Between death, lies, and trust issues, it seems nearly impossible that they'll be able to figure things out together.
"You're it for him, Ever.  And the two of you, the way you work together.  Shit.  Don't you think we all want that?"  - Tommy, Broken Elite
Constantly thrown curve ball after curve ball, they fight against all odds, but will it be enough?  Drama and danger is always lurking right around the corner, waiting to destroy them and everything they love.  Fighting for not only their love, but also their lives, will they persevere, or end up crumbling in defeat?

Some may be forces to be reckoned with, but the Elite?  They're unstoppable.

Book Boyfriend: 9/10 (boys got some serious issues... but who doesn't love a good angsty hockey boy?)

She'll look at me that way again.
I can promise you that.

Back to You - C. Standing

Ruminations of an Insomniac..

Best friends. Lovers. Enemies. Finally, forever. The queen of his kingdom, Ashley brought Rome to his knees, at her feet. All this power she held, at just 17. And he was one hundred percent a goner. The boy loved football. Loved it enough to make a career of it. But he loved Ashley more. She was his universe. He was her champion, on and off the field. But questioned trust can do dreadful things.

"My end game. My forever. My everything. The air I breathe. The life in my lungs. The blood in my veins. I don't exist without her." - Rome Grayson

Years later, time may have passed while they've been living their own lives apart, but little else has changed. Their reunion is tumultuous, at best. But the flame between Rome and Ashley has only been fueled, beyond control, by absence and sexual tension. On the note of sexual tension: the raw passion that C. Standing poured into the this story is unbridled. The steam rising out of these pages, made this girl need to fan herself on more than one occasion. I should have had a cold shower on standby.

In this, her debut novel, she served us a fierce protector of a man, who knows what he wants and runs at it full tilt. A dynamically developed, independent heroine who adamantly guards her heart, lest she get burned again. And a literal lifetime love story. Is it perfect? No. But even the most charmed of lives isn't flawless. It's rife with humanity and I think that lends to a more relatable tale.

Rock-Hard Beautiful - C.M. Stunich

Ramblings of a Bookworm...

Groupie (Book 1)

Oh.  My.  God...  As a concert goer and a huge fan of punk rock music myself, this entire series was like every fantasy I've ever had (and then some) rolled into one steamy package.  Breaking societal norms with the concept of "why do I have to choose?", C.M. Stunich delivers a beautifully written love story between six broken souls.

Each with their own demons, I think we can all find a piece of ourselves within each of the characters - the masks we wear, the struggles we face, the people with whom we surround ourselves... Each character more complex than the next, I felt a piece of my heart break for each and every one of them.
“When you see another lonely traveler walking the same sad, strange path you almost fell off before … it's only right to see if you can guide them down a different road.” - Derek "Muse" Muser
The detail and description was absolutely mind-blowing.  I could feel my heart racing with adrenaline within the first few chapters as the concert was described in incredibly realistic detail and it had me itching to go to a show, and the way each unique character was portrayed from their features to their mannerisms effortlessly painted a beautiful picture before my eyes as I absorbed the words into my body, mind, and soul.

Roadie (Book 2)

Week two of the US side of their World Tour, Lilith and her boys had me up until the wee hours of the morning needing moremoremore.  Delving deeper into the psyche of these poor boys, learning about what scars them (both figuratively and literally) was emotionally exhausting.  There were several moments that I teared up, laughed out loud, and had to put the book down while I collected myself.

After Groupie, I didn't think things possibly get steamier, but oh man was I wrong.  However, I also developed a deeper, more heartfelt view of the boys.  What was primarily just physical in the first book, Roadie brings with it an incredible wash of romance and feelings that go further than anything I think I've ever read.
“I've been living in fear. I've been living only in books. Which is fine, but … I don't want to just read about romance anymore, Lil." - Copeland Park
Every time I read a book, I grow ridiculously attached to the "hero" of the story - in this case, there were five, and I feel like my heart is going to explode.  I had a tried and true favourite in the first book, thinking nothing was going to sway that.  However, as I got further into the second part of this trilogy, as the characters morphed and shed their masks, my opinions started to slowly change along with them, until finally...

Moxie (Book 3)

I decided it was impossible to pick just one favourite...  If Lilith didn't, why should I?  I did manage to narrow it down to two, though, and I was shocked with myself that my initial "number one" wasn't actually in that top two.  But I guess that's the power of a good on-going story, isn't it?  Characters in books (much like people in real life) change as you get to know them.  Their stories are just as intricate and complex as anybody else, and as you peel back the layers and see the person that is truly underneath the clothes, tattoos, smug looks, and snarky comments, you see true beauty and a person worthy of every ounce of love you have to give.
“The past isn't something you run from; it's something you walk slowly past, taking pictures, making memories. You learn from the bad times and treasure the good ones, but you leave that view firmly entrenched in the rearview mirror. All I want to see out the windshield is my future.” - Lilith Goode
Finally getting the closure she needs, Lilith and her boys set off on a private jet to take over the world.  Each destination bringing them closer together, each gaping wound closing just a little more, souls mending and healing together.  I didn't want it to end.  I still can't believe it's done and I only just finished reading them.  I was halfway through this final book and was already mentally adding it to my "re-read" list.

Love is never simply black and white, and this trilogy expresses that explicitly.  Love is full of bright, vibrant colours, and is sometimes a little unconventional.  At the end of the day, the most important thing is that you and your lover(s) are happy - everyone else can go f*** themselves.

Book Boyfriend: 9/10  (I struggled with this... for a solid ten minutes... how does one POSSIBLY rate 5 unique individuals into one lump sum??)
Flow: 10/10
Plot: 10/10
Overall: 10/10

The Hitman's Desire - T. Steele

Ramblings of a Bookworm...

This was the first Mafia Romance I've ever read, and I'm not going to lie - I was skeptical at first (just as I was when I read my first Bully Romance), but much to my delight, T. Steele did not disappoint.

Enter calm, cool, collected, 25 year old hitman, John Russo, with his ice blue eyes, curly black hair and stone cold demeanor.  His entire person screams danger, and he has the stealth of a damn ninja.  Nothing shakes him, and he walks around silently with a stoic expression, giving absolutely nothing away.  Until he meets Ruby, the bosses 19 year old daughter.
"I've never met a woman who felt like my salvation, Ruby.  A man like me doesn't deserve salvation.  Or anything good really, but you feel that way for me.  Fuck knows I'm not strong enough to fight that."  - John
The immediate chemistry that Ruby and John share shook me to my very core.  They balance each other in such a beautiful way that it's impossible not to root for them.  John hurt my heart on more than one occasion (the quote above one of several) while Ruby made me beam with an odd sense of pride at her strength and courage.  With a perfect balance of action, romance, and comic relief, this book is truly a journey like no other I've ever experienced before.

Book Boyfriend: 9/10 (yep... even though hes a killer, hes still getting a solid 9)
Flow: 10/10
Plot: 10/10
Overall: 10/10

* * * Synopsis * * *

When you’re almost killed, not once, but twice, finding out your father is a mafia boss doesn’t seem so bad.

What is bad, though, is the feelings I’m trying to hide toward John, my father’s personal assassin.

With his brooding, bad boy aura and intense blue eyes, I know he could command anything from me and I would obey.

His eyes, though sinister, say they want to touch me, to kiss me, to cross that line we know is forbidden.

I feel drawn to him. His presence calls to me like a beacon.

Even though my father took him in and molded him into what he is today—a merciless killer— my father will be even more merciless when it comes to his only heir. Nothing but a brutal and violent death will be waiting for John if my father ever finds out.

But I don’t know if either of us are strong enough to stay away.

Broken Knight - LJ Shen

Ruminations of an Insomniac..

Knight and Luna. Where to even begin? This was a re-read for me, so I could refresh my memory. And I'm so glad I did. Throwing in everything, from quippy dialogue that made me laugh out loud to entire chapters that made me straight up ugly cry, LJ Shen drown me in their world.

Trauma does funny things to us, as people. I think it's because we're not actually designed to deal with it, so our minds construct alternative paths to help us cope. But having people in our corner, while we navigate through those backroads, is so critical. Tragedy knits us together in the most unexpected ways.

“I hate that word. Fine. It’s not good. It’s not bad. It’s nothing.” - Luna Rexroth

Their whole lives, Knight and Luna have been attached at the hip. Him, forever protecting his Moonshine from more hurt. A literal Knight in shining armour (if you substitute shining armour with football gear). And her, quietly observing and never forgetting a single moment, as the world unfolds around them. But somewhere along the line, their innocence became something more.

Among so many other things (I could talk or write for days about all the life things it touches on), this story beautifully illustrates the nuance of all the people that walk into (and potentially out of) our lives. Parents and siblings. Friends, new and old. The chance encounters. The relationships we construct out of convenience or necessity. And the most magical of them all (in my opinion), the rarely actually encountered, ride or die. The one that holds space in the fibre of who we are, the other end of our red string. The one we choose. “Always. Whenever. Forever.”

"Remember, my love. The sun will rise tomorrow. It always does. And don’t you dare live one day of your life without basking in its glory." - Rosie Leblanc-Cole

Rating:

Book Boyfriend: 9/10 (yeah, I know. he's one of my all time favorites. but he's also so extraordinarily flawed)
Flow: 10/10 (LJ Shen is almost always flawless in this category ❤️)
Plot: 9/10 (only because the path these characters take was super frustrating for me to follow along with. it all made sense at the end though)

Overall: 9/10

Currently available on Kindle (and Kindle Unlimited).

To love.
