Punk 57 - Penelope Douglas

Ramblings of a Bookworm...

I'm going to be completely honest here - I'm at a loss for words...  This was my very first read within the "bully romance" genre, and I wasn't sure how I would feel about it.  As someone who was bullied quite a lot growing up, I couldn't fathom the idea of falling for your tormentor.  But Punk 57 by Penelope Douglas changed that for me, and I finally understood.

The past two days has been a back and forth between my and my sister, me texting her variations of "WTF?!?" several times as I read through this novel.  Misha - the tortured bad boy who doesn't care about fitting in, only about being himself.  Ryen - the closet geek and timid girl who hides behind a cruel facade and cares far too much about fitting in.  My heart broke and jumped into my throat on several occasions as I glared, teared up, laughed, and even bared my teeth once or twice at my Kindle.

Misha and Ryen find solace and comfort in each other for 7 years whilst never meeting, only communicating via good old fashioned snail mail.  The way they torture and torment each other throughout the book stole my breath away, her trying to show off for her friends while he's trying with everything in his power to find the girl he knows and loves beneath the mask.

It's heart breaking, thought provoking, gut wrenching, and raw.  Two people who would probably never associate under normal circumstances coming together and sifting through the lies to finally figure out who they are.

Now I could go on for hours, but it would give the entire book away, and I really encourage you to read it.  But please, I am begging you - be kind to one another.  If someone is down, try to lift them back up.  You don't need to be cruel to gain attention - you simply need to be you.  Throughout this book, I kept thinking of a quote from a movie that I've always loved, so I'm going to leave you with it to mull over.

"Why are you trying so hard to fit in when you were born to stand out?"

*** Synopsis ***
"We were perfect together. Until we met."

Misha

I can’t help but smile at the words in her letter. She misses me.

In fifth grade, my teacher set us up with pen pals from a different school. Thinking I was a girl, with a name like Misha, the other teacher paired me up with her student, Ryen. My teacher, believing Ryen was a boy like me, agreed.

It didn’t take long for us to figure out the mistake. And in no time at all, we were arguing about everything. The best take-out pizza. Android vs. iPhone. Whether or not Eminem is the greatest rapper ever…

And that was the start. For the next seven years, it was us.

Her letters are always on black paper with silver writing. Sometimes there’s one a week or three in a day, but I need them. She’s the only one who keeps me on track, talks me down, and accepts everything I am.

We only had three rules. No social media, no phone numbers, no pictures. We had a good thing going. Why ruin it?

Until I run across a photo of a girl online. Name’s Ryen, loves Gallo’s pizza, and worships her iPhone. What are the chances?

F*ck it. I need to meet her.

I just don’t expect to hate what I find.

Ryen

He hasn’t written in three months. Something’s wrong. Did he die? Get arrested? Knowing Misha, neither would be a stretch.

Without him around, I’m going crazy. I need to know someone is listening. It’s my own fault. I should've gotten his number or picture or something.

He could be gone forever.

Or right under my nose, and I wouldn’t even know it.

Book Boyfriend Series - Erin Noelle

Book Boyfriend Series
Metamorphosis, Ambrosia, Euphoria, Timeless

**EACH SYNOPSIS AT THE END OF THIS POST**

Metamorphosis - Book 1

Prepare yourself to embark on a journey with just as many lows as there are highs.  A book of self-discovery, love, loss, and heartbreak, witness the trials and tribulations of innocent, naive Scarlett MacGregor.

Learning who you are is no easy task - you will rise and fall many times before finally becoming the person you are meant to be - and Erin Noelle captures that flawlessly in the first beautifully heartbreaking book in the captivating series that is The Book Boyfriend Series.

While I did laugh more than I cried, there were still a fair bit of tears as I completely immersed myself if the lives of Scarlett, Evie, Ash, and Mason.

- Ramblings of a Bookworm

"You are about to go through this crucial transition in your life, changing from the sheltered girl you were under your parents control to a beautiful young woman that's ready to spread her wings and fly." - Ash Walker

No matter how many times I read this book, the story always brings me to my knees. The characters, in all their facets, get to me. Hook, line, sinker. Scarlett, the hopeful, sheltered romantic who wants nothing more than to irrevocably change her life. Evie, the spitfire bestie who teaches Scarlett so very much about life. Ash, with a soul secretly as fragile as butterfly wings. Mason, witty and charming, and literally the whole package. 😉

Coming of age is never easy. In fact, it's often one of the most challenging times in our lives. Not physically, but emotionally. And we get an up close and personal, all access pass, to witness Scarlett MacGregor (and her little crew) figure out who she is. We get to laugh with her and cry with her. Share in her frustration and revel in her realizations. And what a beautiful thing it is to witness.

Erin Noelle brought this world to life, like only she could have. These four lives may have been born of her mind. But she put them out into our world, where they stole our hearts and broke them. But I've learned through this life, there is almost always beauty in the breaking.

- Ruminations of an Insomniac

Ambrosia - Book 2

In the second installment of Scarlett MacGregor's life, we see her try to come to terms with who she is as a person after the tragic loss she had to endure.  Stumbling through the darkness with her heart guiding her, she tries to find her wings in the best way she knows how - to love fiercely without abandon and hope her wings will sprout before she hits the ground during her free fall into the unknown.

Jealousy and fear run deep in her veins, and she tends to have a hard time really thinking things through and stopping to look at the whole picture before jumping to conclusions.  Between her deep love, hope, and recklessness, she desperately tries to grip on to anything to help her find her way to the light at the end of the tunnel.

- Ramblings of a Bookworm

"I need a lot of work, and I really want you to be here with me through all of it.  It's not always going to be pretty, but all I ask for is honesty." - Scarlett MacGregor

Scarlett McGregor has got to be one of the most frustrating characters I have ever come across.. Not that I don't love her, because I do. Deeply. But the girl is as indecisive as a kid in a candy shop. Sure she knows what she wants, but she rarely has the patience to take the advice of "one thing at a time." Jumping into things with wild abandon, then navigating by heart with zero visibility and hoping for the best.

I also can't help but admire her. She is so feverishly passionate about who she loves. Most of us can't even fathom being loved to the extent she does. But passion like that, feeds recklessness, and Scarlett isn't an acception to that rule. After all, she is only human. Beautifully flawed, and desperately seeking her own wings.

The second part of Scarlett's story is full of these things. Told with both humour and hard truths, prompting my heart to ache for hers, and all those her heart touches. Because realistically, to know Scarlett is to love all of her, in one way or another. But to love Scarlett, is to also accept how she loves as a whole: boundlessly.

- Ruminations of an Insomniac

Euphoria - Book 3

This poor girl just can't catch a break...  Part of me wants to scream at her for being so reckless and naive, however the other part wants to give her a giant hug and protect her from all the evils this world has to offer...

After shifting gears abruptly in Ambrosia, Scarlett finally starts to find peace and happiness, and her life finally starts to make sense.  However, there is one thing that she is still missing: closure.  When Mason's life starts spiraling out of control, Scarlett feels a deep-rooted regret and all-consuming guilt that she can't seem to shake.

To some, the idea of having two incredible, beautiful men pine after you to be a dream come true, but throughout this journey, you come to realize that is most certainly not the case.  Having to choose between two people you care for so deeply is sure to tear you apart in the end.  Ash, the beautiful, understanding soul with a surfer vibe and a brilliant mind; Mason, the tortured musician that is the complete "bad boy" image, but with a heart so big he doesn't know what to do with it.  Both worthy of Scarlett's love and affection in their own way, but both with their own unique set of baggage.

When you lose someone you love, it consumes you in darkness.  You wonder how you'll ever move on, and question why it was them and not you.  But to lose two, is sure to break you in ways that are near impossible to escape.

- Ramblings of a Bookworm

"Because of you, I have come to realize that I do deserve to be loved, and most importantly, I’ve learned to love myself. I’m not there yet, but I’m much closer than I’ve ever been to finding my euphoria." - Mason 'Rat' Templeton

Scarlett MacGregor will always be one of the most challenging characters I will ever encounter. Sure, the part of her story we have been privy to has not necessarily encouraged stability. But she is naive and indecisive to a fault. The type of person you want to grab by the shoulders and shake a little. At least that's what I used to think. When I initially read her story, I was so focused on the parts I didn't feel she appreciated thoroughly enough. But over the years, as I have re-read and gotten to know her better, I realized that she is being pulled in too many directions to ever fully grasp those parts of her life.

She goes through this season of her life, almost frantically. Wearing herself down. Loving both Ash and Mason in different ways but without reservation. Consciously aware that both of these men want everything she has to offer, yet unable to grant that to either of them. In turn hurting everyone involved. She has so much love to give and she hands it out recklessly. To them, while never actually loving herself.

Her soul-deep feelings aren't just of love though. Scarlett harbours so much guilt and pain that it's a wonder she's still upright.  Constantly on the verge of crumbling, but hiding it so well in the crevices of who she is. How much more turmoil and loss can a person possibly endure, in such a young life?

- Ruminations of an Insomniac

Timeless - Book 4

When a 6-year-in-the-future Epilogue ended this heartbreaking trilogy, I damn near died.  What happened in those 6 years?  How did Scarlett finally come to terms with all of the loss, heartbreak, and pain?  I was relieved when I discovered that Timeless was a beautiful Novella, taking a look back in time by reminiscing over old photographs.

If any character in any book by any author deserves a break in the end, it's Scarlett.  With the hell she went through, she deserved her happily ever after.  Yes, she was infuriating at times.  Yes, she made stupid decisions.  Yes, I may have played favourites a tiny bit and cheered a little to loud at the way her ending turned out...  But that's the thing about books.  You get sucked into the lives of these fictional characters, and root for the ones you feel the deepest connection to, crying when they fall and cheering when they get right back up.

Finally finding peace, and herself, along the way, there is one thing I can say with absolute certainty - Scarlett MacGregor finally found her wings. 😌

- Ramblings of a Bookworm

"Instantly, I was engulfed in his arms, deafened by the cheers and applause surrounding us." - Scarlett MacGregor

Honestly, after I read the epilogue of Euphoria, I frantically flipped back and forth through the pages. I was convinced that I had missed something. Imagine my dismay, when reality hit me in the face. The story had, in fact, jumped ahead six years. A LOT can happen in six years.. You can grow a glorified little tadpole into a walking, talking in full (usually coherent) sentences, sometimes reading (we can only hope 😉) tiny human being, in six years.

Then, wrapping her readers in a 'sorry I left you hanging' hug, Erin gave us Timeless. A walk down memory lane with Scarlett. I breathed a sigh of relief then proceeded to revel in the moments Scarlett held most dear through that time in between. A highlight reel. Her greatest hits, if you will. I found myself reminded of Scarlett's strength, through the tumultuous path that lead her to this point. And I also bore witness to so much love, finally understood and balanced. Love beyond measure.

I laughed and cried, but this time they were tears of joy. For the beautiful life Scarlett had found herself in. Filled with hope and wonder. This novella was the perfect bow, wrapping this entire story with care. As I turned the final page I knew, without a doubt, that Scarlett found her wings. And she was beautiful when she soared.

- Ruminations of an Insomniac

Embarking on this adventure has made for a remarkable whirlwind of an inaugural month. With our hearts on our sleeves and pens in our hands (or keyboards?) we have shared our insight on some of the most incredible characters and their stories. But the reality is that, without Erin Noelle, unsuspectingly planting the idea in our heads years ago, we likely wouldn't even be on this journey. So thank you Erin, for letting us meet Scarlett and Evie. And be inspired by their stories. Also thank you to all of the word weavers who are taking a chance on us, allowing us into your worlds, through both ARCs and your already published works. And finally to everyone we have in our corner. Those supporting this adventure, in whatever way you can. Sharing our enthusiasm, even when you don't actually understand what we're so excited about. We can't wait to see where we go next. ❤️

~Synopsis~
Metamorphosis - Book 1

Scarlett MacGregor has lived a very sheltered life courtesy of her over-the-top controlling parents. Having never been to a co-ed party, much less on a date, Scarlett has relied on her books, her music, and living vicariously through her best friend Evie to keep her sanity as she's patiently awaited her freedom from their rule.

When Scarlett and Evie go away to college, Scarlett quickly meets Ashton, Dylan, and later, Mason, and is thrown into a crash course of like, love, and lust. With Evie's help, she must figure out the difference in the three and which one she wants before she ends up without any of them.

Metamorphosis is the story of Scarlett's transformation from a young, naive girl to a strong, mature young woman and her search for self-discovery and true love.

Ambrosia - Book 2

After coming to terms with the tragedy that rocked her world, Scarlett MacGregor has returned to try to pick up the pieces of the broken relationships that she left behind.

Ash and Mason were left devastated and heartbroken following Scarlett’s sudden, unannounced departure. They are both ready and willing to forgive her and welcome her back into their lives with open arms. However, a lot can happen in 8 months…

Scarlett must learn to overcome the obstacles thrown in her path to prevent the past from repeating itself. Can she learn to fly with her own wings and discover the secret to eternal love?

Euphoria - Book 3

After a series of catastrophic misunderstandings and impulsively poor decision-making, Scarlett MacGregor finds herself once again torn between two loves, as different as they may be. Lacking proper closure with their relationship, accompanied by the overwhelming guilt for her role in his devastating downfall, Scarlett resolves to help Mason recover and reclaim his life as a budding rock star. However, now that he has finally claimed her as his, Ash Walker is bound and determined to keep her by his side, and he will go to any lengths necessary to do just that.

Mason Templeton has hit rock bottom. He’s in love with a girl whose heart and soul belong to another and he’s partied his way off of an international music tour that was supposed to be his big break. Returning home for rehab sounds like the worst possible way to start a new year, but when an unexpected friendship emerges, he begins to realize that maybe everything does happen for a reason.

Euphoria is the third and final installment of Scarlett, Ash, and Mason’s self-discovering journeys to happiness and understanding the meaning of true love ~ the kind that begs for complete surrender.

Timeless - Book 4

Six years. Two People. One love.

After the long awaited wedding of her dreams, Scarlett Templeton, along with her rockstar husband and their five year old twins, are finally putting down roots and settling into their first suburban home.

While unpacking, they stumble across a box filled with photos spanning the previous six years, and they're catapulted down the proverbial memory lane.

Join the couple on their reminiscent journey as they learn a picture is truly worth a thousand words and the emotions they elicit are timeless.

In The Unlikely Event - L.J. Shen

Ramblings of a Bookworm...

Have you ever been on a tilt-a-whirl?  Your body and mind fly left and right, sometimes uncertain which direction you'll end up.  There's a new surprise waiting at every turn, ready to knock your world on its axis with a vengeance.  That, ladies and gentlemen, is how I have felt over the past 48 hours (damn day job, interfering with precious reading time...)

Prepare yourselves for the tangled web of Aurora (Rory) Belle Jenkins, the creative, punk photographer from America, and Malachy (Mal) Doherty, the talented, sexy Irishman with the mysterious violet eyes and quick wit.  With perspective flipping between the two (along with a few... unlikely surprises thrown in), as well as flashbacks to eight years prior when they agreed to put their futures in the hands of fate, I now have a very unfair cramp I need to live with due to the amount of laughter the words ripped out of me.

However, don't let this fact deceive you.  L.J. Shen not only delivers a hefty amount of humour into this 366 page masterpiece (yes - I said masterpiece), but also with an underlying plot of seriousness and heart-wrenching reality, which (in my opinion) maintained thinly veiled behind the sarcasm and sharp tongue of the main characters, as well as the unexpected perspective twists, until the bittersweet end.

Through years filled with lies, deceit, loss, and unexpected turns, can a contract written on a napkin by two young strangers possibly prevail?  I could tell you, but then you wouldn't feel nearly as inclined to read this story which is an "enigma of epic proportions" as I informed my sister.

Find In The Unlikely Event by L.J. Shen through Amazon, via Kindle Unlimited (if KU is your cup of coffee - because in our opinion it's better than tea.), and audiobook.

In New York.
And he’s America’s music obsession.
The intangible Irish poet who brings record executives to their knees.
The blizzard in my perfect, unshaken snow globe.
Last time we spoke, he was a beggar with no intention of becoming a king.
But a king he became, and now I’m his servant.
I’m not the same broken princess Malachy Doherty put back together with his callused hands.

A boyfriend I adore.
An apartment, a roommate, a life.
I changed. He changed, too.
But Mal kept the napkin.

Our Origin Story

Before we get to the main event, we've decided to give you all a bit of an origin story.

Sam - Ramblings of a Bookworm

For my birthday about 6 years ago, my sister gifted me signed copies of the first two books in a series.  Little did I know, that series would be the beginning of an amazing journey that she and I would embark on together.

As I've mentioned before, she and I have always been a fan of the written word, always sharing our thoughts over certain books, recommending epic reads to each other, and swooning over all of our favourite book boyfriends. The Book Boyfriend Series by Erin Noelle was certainly no exception.

As I journeyed through the life of Scarlett and her best friend Evie, who loved books just as much as my sister and I, one thing became abundantly clear: one day, I am going to become a book blogger, just like Scarlett.

Fast forward 6 years, and I am finally making that dream a reality with my best friend by my side.  I can't imagine doing this on my own, and I'm so excited that we've decided to explore this new world together.

Pam - Ruminations of an Insomniac

In my teens, I wasn't an avid reader. But I have had an infatuation with words, themselves, for as long as I can remember. Dumbledore said it best, "Words are, in my not so humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic, capable of both inflicting injury and remedying it." That being said, over the course of the last decade, I have found myself devouring more and more stories each year. In fact, 2019 is shaping up to be my first 200+ book year!

When I stumbled across The Book Boyfriend series, there were only two books so far. I will admit, that at least 90% of the books in my library have been bought based on the cover. I often won't even read a synopsis before the book. And the other 10% are recommended to me, regardless of the cover, and I still don't read the synopsis in advance. Anyway, the stunning (yet simple) cover art drew me in, but it didn't take long before I was captivated by this world. Book blogging was a concept that fascinated me, out of the gate. And as I got to know Scarlett and Evie more, I drew so many parallels with the dynamic I had with my little sister. I gifted her those first two, and once we were finally through all four of the books that tell the this amazing story, we had come to the same conclusion.

Over the course of the last 6 years, we never stopped reading. But life got busy, as it does, and the whole concept fell to the back of the closet. Our book blog dream collected dust bunnies, living behind our shoes. Then life changed again and the idea kept popping up. So here we are, probably biting off more than we can chew, but so excited to explore this world. We couldn't be more grateful for all of you, reading this. And for the authors who write these worlds for us to get lost in. Without all of you, this adventure would be for not.

So, come on! Let's laugh, cry, swoon and swear together. Let's see who and what we can find within all these pages. Because this, friends? This is just the beginning!

Waiting For The Sun - Lindsey Iler

Ruminations of an insomniac...

Guys, I'm not okay.. Sure, I know I will be, but my #Hannick recovery is going to take some time. In the meantime, maybe talking about it will help.

The weight of their story is crushing. Incineration, fueled by both passion and hate. They are hot and cold, up and down more often than a toddler in a bouncy castle. Actually, that's a pretty accurate analogy. One moment, Nick and Hannah are bouncing along, in a strangled attempt at adjusting to their new reality, and the next they are painfully brought to their knees. Only to be launched back up, adamantly determined to keep going. See? Toddler in a bouncy castle! But that, friends is just the beginning.

I thought that the first half of this duet was pretty heart-wrenching, but I realize now that I had barely scratched the surface of their depth before now. Some background, I'm normally a book every day or two reader, but this one I had to take in slowly, over several days. And it wasn't that Nick and Hannah didn't pull me in, but that they pulled me too far. I legitimately felt them, and they were heavy. Drowning in hurt. Yet they kept going, page after page. Pushing back, desperate for a lungful of air.

Their story is one of yearning and devotion. An avenue to show us "just how fragile life is, how fleeting and small we all are.." I admit that, almost to the very end, my heart hurt for them. But I will say that life has a funny way of pulling through, the way it was always supposed to be. The struggles we face in the meantime, help show us just what strength we often don't even realize we possess. Nick and Hannah are every one of us. Pacing, pleading to the stars, hoping through the night for clarity. And all we really needed to do all along was stand still, Waiting For The Sun.

Available on Kindle Unlimited. Go, take a walk with them. Let them tell you their story. I'm not going to lie, it's going to hurt some. But, I'll let you in on a secret. .. Only the very best things do. ❤️

Loving Bad is the story of a good girl who lived a very sheltered life, and is determined to break free to live her life to the fullest.  When she meets Sin Carter, the sexy bad boy with tattoos and piercings, she finds herself in a whole new world.  But no good story would ever be complete without complications.  While both Sin and Taylor try to break free from their dark, haunting pasts, they are hit with obstacles that make it seem like the universe is setting them up to fail.

This book paints a true picture of "opposites attract" and how darkness has its way of lingering and forcing you to either thrive with the hand you're dealt, or roll over and let it consume you.

Can two people who are so different and damaged in their own unique ways truly ever find love and happiness with one another, or will their secrets tear them apart?

Under A Different Sky - Lindsey Iler

Ruminations of an insomniac..

I stumbled across this book thanks to a Meagan Brandy suggestion, and was not disappointed. I read it first, then proceeded to read everything else Lindsey has published, before reading it again.

To start, this book slayed me. Breaking my heart and piecing it back together, more than once. Nick and Hannah have so much natural chemistry, it's a wonder they didn't spontaneously combust at first glance. Both beautifully broken, their stories slid together seamlessly. Shattered in vastly different ways, yet for the same reason. Lindsey's writing runs the gamut. You name it, I felt it: Melted chocolate, sticky sweet. Take a step back and several composing moments, steamy. Real life, yup these are my people, quirky. Wishing I was that witty in high school, sarcastic. Laugh out loud (I startled my toddler on more than one occasion) funny. Sitting on the floor, ugly crying, heart hurt. It's all there.

The story of #Hannick (?is that a thing we're doing now?) speaks volumes to the startling reality of the loss of a young life. It lends encouragement and awe, with the strength these young people put forth. It proves the power of having extraordinary people in your corner. The kind of people that refuse to give up. They'll pull you in, lost in their dynamic. And then suddenly, it's over and you're desperately searching for invisible pages. But rest assured, this review is just in time. Because while that cliffhanger made me lose several hours of sleep, the second half of their duet is releasing in just a few days!!

Stay tuned, after November 4th, for my thoughts on Waiting For The Sun. I have a feeling I'm about to get wrecked, and I'm ALL IN here for it! I just need to make it through this weekend.

Synopsis:

My life is a mess.

I'm walking around with a black eye. My position on the hockey team is questionable at best, and if that’s not bad enough, I think I'm falling for my dead girlfriend's best friend.

Every day, it's a fight to feel alive, and yet, I drink to numb the pain. Everyone is standing back, watching me fall apart.

Everyone except Hannah. No matter how many times I push, she's there to pull me back. She refuses to let me spiral any deeper. And after one kiss—she’s impossible to ignore.

Unfortunately, it seems she and I aren’t the only thing being kept a secret
